Hello there!
Welcome to my blog! Whether you came here because you’ve found me through Google or clicked a link somewhere, thank you for stopping by! I thought I would make my first blog post a brief – and more casual - intro to who I am and what I do. My goal with this blog is to post some design tips and fun and easy DIY projects to inspire you, as well as some personal stuff so you can get to know me. Here goes…
I am a west coast girl through and through – born in Vancouver and raised in South Surrey/White Rock. I am the third of four children, and we’re all very close in age (just over 4 years apart!) I grew up on the beach and on the water, sailing with our uncle every summer between Vancouver and the island. I was active in a lot of sports growing up – from track & field and swimming to soccer and volleyball. I don’t think I caused that much trouble for my parents when I was young, but I’ll know for sure once my step-daughter becomes a teenager!
I graduated high school and went straight to UBC where I joined a sorority (and made some lifelong friendships!), played lots of intramural sports, and graduated with a degree in visual arts. I went on the work in restaurants and an ESL school but knew that neither were my true calling. I traveled – both solo and with friends - before deciding to go back to school.
I knew I wanted a career where I could be creative and work with my hands, do something new every day, and ultimately help people. I looked at several options but was intrigued by the idea of interior design, the social aspects of the job, and the different paths I could take within the industry. I remembered rearranging furniture in my childhood bedroom often and watching home renovation shows with my mom as a teenager and absolutely loving the endless possibilities of how a space could be designed to evoke certain feelings and experiences. So, I chose interior design!
I went to BCIT to complete the diploma in interior design but ended up continuing through to complete the degree, so I could become a registered interior designer (RID) one day. I interned alongside my studies and worked at an architecture firm after graduation before joining HGTV Canada’s Worst to First team. And now, here I am! I also work for myself doing freelance design work when I’m not filming the show.
Some fun facts about me: I am afraid of the dark and I’m afraid of the ocean (and lakes, and some indoor pools – thank you, ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’). I love daydreaming about all the cool things I could make and do (I will get around to them one day!), going outside and enjoying the beautiful city I live in, and getting inspired by other designers/artists/creatives (there are so many talented people out there!)
I am a homebody and have always enjoyed cozying up indoors, but also love spending time out with my family and friends and laughing way too hard about ridiculous stories and life experiences we share with each other.
I live in Kitsilano with my fiancé, but whenever we have a free weekend, we enjoy going over to the Sunshine Coast to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
Thanks again for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit about me here. Let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything specific you’d like me to share on here. 😊
