Upcoming Design Trends for Home Decor
IT’S ALL ABOUT CREATING YOUR PERSONAL SANCTUARY.
Looking for something to rejuvenate your space?
Design trends don’t necessarily have to fit within the box of 365 days, starting and ending on the first and last day of the year. They ebb and flow over time, which means anytime is a new opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate your space.
“But why would I follow trends when I want a space that is classic, timeless, and stylish?” This is a fair question, as many people do not want to invest in changing their home décor as often as trends come in and out of style. And you don’t have to! Yes, some trends change with the seasons, some endure for longer than a year. But, no matter their duration, they can be ‘timeless’ when they are a part of your story. That is, art, furniture, and décor items that you have collected over the years that have staying power, that show the timeline of your life and create a home that is uniquely yours.
These 5 design trends below are in the spotlight, some new and some making a resurgence. Either way, there is beauty in each of them and many ways to incorporate any and all of them into your space.
Natural Fibers
This design trend has been in style for a while, and that’s no surprise. Bringing natural fibers into your design creates a nurturing and grounding environment with the warmth and natural texture of jute, rattan, cotton, and washed linen to name a few. Approachable finishes and unapologetic materials create authentic spaces – the perfect combination for a personal sanctuary. Where to use it? You’re not restricted to bedding, bathroom linens, and area rugs. There are options for walls, window coverings, and décor items, too.
Colours
Yes, these colours are trending in design, but they sure feel timeless to me. Maybe it’s the muted, moody jewels that create a matured, calming vibe or the delicate earth tones that bring a simple warmth to a room. With the paint companies coming out with their upcoming colour of the year (right in line with the trends) you can change up your walls, but there are many other ways to bring these stunning colours into your interiors.
Japanese influence
Japanese influence has shown up in design over the decades, but Japandi - a blend of both Japanese and Scandinavian design – has become more and more prominent in recent years. With their shared aesthetics of clean lines, neutral tones and natural textures, their appreciation of things made by hand, and their passion for sustainability, this pairing is an obviously perfect match made in heaven. In new product lines, you’ll notice bird patterns, lots of bamboo, simplicity in form, and always a hint of wabi sabi (seeing beauty in imperfection.)
Abstract Colour-Block
You can use any colour palette you want when bringing abstract colour blocking into your space, from monochrome, to muted jewel tones, to vibrant, tropical ones. Pulling inspiration from the early 1900s art of abstract minimalism (think Piet Mondrian and Arthur Jackson) this trend can be brought in through art, textiles, how you paint your walls, or even your dinnerware. The simple lines, pleasing form
Handmade Creations
Pottery is having a moment. And I am very excited about it (I’ve signed up for a 6-week pottery course and can’t wait!) Potters and ceramicists have always created uniquely stunning, functional art. But now, they are in the spotlight fostering successful careers in their craft (thank you online shops and social media!) When incorporating pieces into your home, they don’t have to sit idly on a shelf collecting dust. Purchase functional pieces that you can enjoy daily, like this double bowl by Cloutier Ceramics.
When paired with staple pieces, you can still get timeless design while incorporating these trends in your home décor. Timeless describes items that have been given meaning through a thoughtful and rigorous design process, curated over your lifetime.
We like to create homes that are reflective of our clients and have a style that seamlessly pairs with and transitions through trends, so you can bring in that new textile or colour palette without having to change everything. Hopefully this post inspires you to bring in some fresh pieces to your home, and ease your mind about incorporating trends into timeless design.
