Should I Hire an Interior Designer?
A question that many folks ask when they’re making plans for their home.
Let us help answer it!
If you are in the process of planning a renovation or looking to build a new home, you’ve probably considered hiring a designer (you’re here, right?) A renovation or new build can be intimidating, and so can the idea of hiring on a designer. Will they listen to my wants and needs? Will my budget allow for one? It’s a daunting decision, but you’ve come to the right place for some guidance.
Scroll down to the four questions below and if you answer ‘yes’ to any of them, an Interior Designer will be a great addition to your project team:
Are you moving into a new home?
Sometimes the furniture that worked in your old home won’t work in your new home, or maybe you’re wanting a fresh start with a cohesive and fluid design throughout. It’s overwhelming to thinking about furnishing an entire house, so that’s where an interior designer comes in. We can help you with paint selection, window treatments, furniture layout, and decorative lighting. And if you’re moving into a home that needs updating, we can help you with that, too.
Are you planning on renovating your current home? (big and small projects)
Taking on any size renovation can be a lot – it’s a full-time job if you’re project managing, vetting trades, making design decisions on the fly, and carrying all the stress. And if it’s happening in your current home while you’re living there, it can tip you over the edge. Yes, your contractor can help you with demolition and basic finish selection, but a designer will help with finishes and space planning, along with the functional details that you may not think about (for example - outlet locations, kitchen cabinet organization, and flow through a room).
Do you have a reasonable budget to work with?
You don’t have to have an astronomical budget to hire on a designer. You can actually save money working with a designer. We have access to trade pricing on almost everything, and pass this on to our clients where possible (transparency is one of our core values here at CYID). The interior design fees can be offset by the various discounts we have access to, so it can definitely be worth your investment. Our wealth of knowledge and resources is invaluable, too.
Are you ready for a change?
Have you been spending a lot more time in your home and noticing what doesn’t work for you? Has your home been the same for a decade or two and you want to freshen things up a bit? Collaborating with a designer will help alleviate the stress and anxiety of flipping through thousands of paint colours and wallpaper samples or scrolling through hundreds of pages of nightstands on several different websites. We are here to listen to you wants and needs and guide you in the right direction.
Looking for some tips when you meet with your designer? Share your design goals and dreams with them. Talk about how you live in your home (don’t be shy if your family eats on the couch more often than at the dining table!) With this information, we can assess your functional needs in each room and share design solutions to ensure your home is the perfect fit for you.
All the things,
Hello! Catherine here. :)
I’m a Vancouver-based interior designer and love all things creative! I’ll be sharing things that inspire me, posting design tips and DIY projects, chatting about all kinds of topics, and hopefully inspiring some people to make little changes at home to create an environment that is functional, beautiful, and a perfect reflection of you!
