What better way to get to know someone than to look at their music or podcast library?

There is always more to learn!

I completed 9+ years of post-secondary education (no Masters’ or PhD yet, but two Bachelors’ degrees!), so saying that I enjoy learning things is an understatement. Since I don’t plan on going back to school for a little while, I’m getting my education fix through some pretty neat podcasts. And since sharing is caring, I thought I’d put together a quick blog post about what I’m listening to and share my favs with you here!

I got onto the podcast train a bit late (I used to Youtube talks/stand-ups or listen to CBC radio before) but now that I’m on it I’m hooked. I got pulled in when a friend posted an episode of Hidden Brain on Instagram and I tuned in and never looked back! I’ve done the Serial and S-Town stuff and breezed through Dirty John, Uncover: Escaping NXIVM, etc. but the podcasts that I’ve been addicted to are mostly psychology, history, and science-related. I have always been fascinated by the human brain, why we are the way we are, how we are all more similar than different, and some of these podcasts help satiate that fascination. Here are my favourites right now:

HIDDEN BRAIN

NPR’s Hidden Brain, hosted by Shankar Vedantam: One of my go-to podcasts that releases weekly episodes discussing human psychology - why we think/act/do what we do individually and as a society. This podcast is a must-have in your library!

HISTORY OF THE 90’S

Curious Cast’s History of the 90’s, hosted by Kathy Kenzora: A newer podcast with about dozen episodes, this one releases every two weeks and goes in-depth into an event, fad, or pop-culture icon that really defined the decade. I find this one so neat because I grew up in the 90’s (although I was on the younger side) and I enjoy re-learning about the events from an adult perspective.

99% INVISIBLE

Radiotopia’s 99% Invisible, hosted by Roman Mars: This podcast covers a broad range of topics - things that shape our world - from objects, to architecture, to technology, and everything in between. The most recent one I listened to that I found very interesting was the history of the mannequin, specifically ‘Cynthia’.

REVISIONIST HISTORY

Revisionist History, hosted by Malcolm Gladwell: each week Malcolm touches on a topic/event/person in history and looks at the story from a different perspective - a retelling/reinterpretation. I love this one because of it’s approach to storytelling and seeing something from a different viewpoint.

CURIOSITY DAILY

Curiosity Daily Podcast, hosted by Cody Gough and Ashley Hamer: These little 10-minute episodes come out daily Monday-to-Friday and quickly explain 3 things. You really do get smarter after listening to these and can add to your list of conversation starters (like how tattoos strengthen your immune system, the myth about sneezing with your eyes open, and how phone typing is catching up to keyboard typing!)

MATING MATTERS

iHeartMedia’s Mating Matters, hosted by Dr. Wendy Walsh: curious about human relationships and the biology behind it all? This is the place to learn some fun facts about human interaction and intimate relationships!

THIS PODCAST WILL KILL YOU

This Podcast Will Kill You, hosted by the Erins: Who doesn’t love learning about diseases - both current and eradicated - and doing so while enjoying a ‘quarantini’ which is a disease-themed cocktail created by the hosts (they also make a ‘placeberita’ which is the mocktail version). These two fun and very smart ladies make the science behind these diseases easy to digest!
