Friendships Are The Best Ships
Who would you rather sail the stormy seas with?
We immediately group-hugged, giggled, and talked about relationships, work, family, life…and it all just felt so right.
The other weekend, I had the most wonderful day with two and a half of my girlfriends. One of them is a mama, hence the ½ for the little one! Our fourth - and my bestie/wifey/ladylove - couldn’t make it, but she was there in spirit!
Anne, Magee, and I have known each other for almost 15 years (what?!): we met back in our UBC days when we were active members in our sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Although we were friends in university, we really became close-knit after we all graduated (we reminisced about this, actually). Our little story in a nutshell: Magee and I decided one early winter evening at an alumnae event that we were going to get seasons’ passes to Whistler, buy all the gear, and go snowboarding every weekend. And we did. And Anne joined us as a skier. The end.
Anne picked me up and we drove the beautiful drive up the Sea-to-Sky to visit Magee and her little one. During the winding drive, we did our best to keep our updating to a minimum as we wanted to save it for when we were all together. (I think we did OK!) Once we got into town, instead of turning left at the intersection to go to our staple back-in-the-day pit stop, we turned right and arrived at Magee and her husband’s new home.
We immediately group hugged, giggled, talked about relationships, work, family, life… And, because we’re real adults now and own homes and love receiving appliances as gifts, we talked about how we honestly feel about central vacuum systems, agreed that we like to keep 2 dish towels – one for use and one for decoration, - and that we can see ourselves becoming our parents because that’s how we were raised/that’s what we know. And it all just felt so right.
Somewhere in there, as per usual, we reminisced about the days when we frolicked and played in the winter wonderland of Whistler during our twenties, and how that chapter led us to where we are today. It was magical (both the days of frolicking AND the reminiscing!)
Like everyone else, I always enjoy meeting up with my friends – updating them on my life, hearing about what is happening in theirs, and being so proud of them and their accomplishments. And being able to reminisce and fondly share our own stories of the exact same events and laugh deeply!
I guess what I’m getting at and what I took away from our short and sweet afternoon together was – aside from great life updates - the importance of nurturing friendships, making the time for each other in our crazy schedules, being vulnerable, listening to each others’ stories and sharing our own, and boosting each other both on purpose and without even knowing it. #babessupportingbabes
Friendship, like any relationship, takes effort but feels effortless. I think it’s so beautiful how different it is for different people, too, and how you can spend time apart but always pick up where you left off without skipping a beat.
Enduring friendships offer the magic of reminiscing, being able to do so with the wonderful people who knew you at other stages in your life (and vice versa).
True friendship is cheering each other on through all of the adventures we come across and the empowerment that support unintentionally ignites.
We are all on different paths in life but there is a common thread that keeps us together, which I think is just the coolest! Is it the fact that we were in the same sorority and have a shared love of snow sports? Or is it something more profound? I’m sure it’s all of the above, but I don’t need to define it. I am happy just knowing that it’s something, it’s there, and I have an amazing group of women by my side.
