DIY Décor: "Handcrafted" Vase

DIY Décor: "Handcrafted" Vase

Want to add a unique - and stylish - piece to your home décor that you can make yourself?

The other week, I wanted to make a budget-friendly décor piece for my home that was quick and had a unique, handcrafted look. This is what I made:

Isn’t the faux lavender cute, too?

Isn’t the faux lavender cute, too?

A Saturday afternoon craft idea that checks all the boxes for stylish, handcrafted, quick, and easy, and it looks anything but crafty!

Supplies required:

This DIY only requires a few simples supplies to execute: a glass or plastic vessel (I picked up a glass cylinder vase at the dollar store), sandpaper, a container of spackling, and a spackling knife. And, of course, a clear coat spray to seal and protect it.

Let’s launch into the steps, shall we?

Use the sandpaper to rough up the exterior of the vase, this will help ensure the spackling adheres well to the surface. Use a damp cloth to remove any dust.

With the spackling knife, apply a healthy layer of the spackling to the exterior of the vase. I chose to use the pink dry time indicator that dries white, so you know when it is dry all the way through.

Using your finger, create vertical lines in the spackling - this gives a fluted texture. Be sure to tidy up the top rim and bottom, but no need to be too perfectionist here because imperfections add even more character to this piece!

When you’re happy with the fluting detail, let the piece dry for 24-48 hours. I dried mine upside down on a paper towel holder, but if you keep enough space at the bottom, you can dry it right side up. When it’s completely dry (an no longer pink, if you use the same spackling as I did), be sure to spray it with a clear lacquer to prevent the spackling from crumbling when handled.

And VOILÀ!

Here is a little video that shows you the process of making the vase. It really is so quick and easy! The hardest part is waiting for it to dry so you can fill it with fresh, dry, or faux florals and put it on display in your home. :)
